Enhancing Disaster Response: F1RST's New Power Pole Training Lane

At F1RST, part of our mission is to advance public safety through innovative technology, tactics and science. We are excited to announce the recent installation of a new training lane at the F1RST Campus, made possible by the generous support of the Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative. Their donation of personnel, time, equipment and materials was instrumental in the completion of this project. A huge thank you also goes to Crockett's Towing who

generously provided the vehicle for this project.

The new training lane features three upright power poles and lines, along with a downed pole positioned on a crashed vehicle. This setup will provide invaluable training opportunities for crews and drone pilots, enabling them to assess damage in the aftermath of disasters.

The aftermath of the recent hurricanes with extensive damage to homes and infrastructure has put a spotlight on the critical work performed by lineworkers and utility personnel and F1RST is excited to offer a practical training site to enhance the abilities of these essential personnel to complete their mission-critical work.

Training scenarios will focus on teaching pilots how to locate victims in potentially hazardous and high-voltage scenarios and how to accurately identify pole numbers and assess potential issues, allowing them to relay critical information to responders and power authorities swiftly and efficiently. This capability is essential for expediting response, rescue and repair efforts in the field.

Additionally, the power pole training lane is strategically located adjacent to our two FEMA-certified rubble piles, enhancing our search and rescue and UAS training capabilities.

We look forward to seeing the positive impact this new addition will have on our community's safety and response readiness.

Stay tuned for more updates and training opportunities as we continue to support first responders and community partners in their vital missions.
